Story Pirates started off as a scrappy educational theater company teaching narrative writing to kids and performing their work on stage. We were guided by a deep belief that kids are creative geniuses, and also by a concern that an impersonal, top-down approach to education can dampen kids’ innate passion and curiosity to learn. Our solution was to assemble some of the most talented actors, comedians and musicians in the world and to enlist their help blowing kids’ minds by taking kids’ own ideas and stories as seriously as—if not more seriously than—they did themselves.
Two decades later, our work has grown in scale and prominence, but we’ve never wavered from our original goal: to create electrifying experiences where kids feel unexpectedly seen and heard as storytellers, and in the process, realize that literacy and writing aren’t about obligatory assignments; they’re the most powerful tools any of us has to cultivate and communicate our own unique voice to the world.
It’s gratifying to take a step back and see how far Story Pirates has come. At the same time, you’d be surprised at how scrappy we still are, in the sense that our funding needs have grown commensurate to the larger impact we’re now able to have. As always, we rely on the generosity of our friends and fans like you to power our work in schools and low-income communities.
Our podcast debuted at the top of the charts in 2017. In 2024, we crossed the 100 million download mark and remain the #1 podcast for kids and families in the world. With your continued support, we can only imagine where we’ll be 20 years from now—and beyond.
